The Test (Writing Part)

The Test

The Academic Writing component of the IELTS exam evaluates your ability to write in a clear, coherent, and structured manner in English. The test comprises two tasks, requiring completion within a total of one hour. Task 1, taking approximately 20 minutes, involves describing visual information and is worth one-third of the total marks. Task 2, which should take about 40 minutes, involves expressing and justifying an opinion and accounts for two-thirds of the total marks.

Task 1

The candidate is presented with some form of visual data, such as a chart, graph, table, or diagram, and must describe this information in their own words without providing personal opinion or analysis. The candidate should spend about 20 minutes on this task and produce a minimum of 150 words.

Task 2

This requires the candidate to present a viewpoint or argument based on a given question and support this with their own knowledge and opinions. This task requires a more substantial response, with a suggested minimum of 250 words, reflecting the larger allocation of marks and time.
