Task 2 – Discussion/Opinion Essay: Tips and Tactics

Task 2 – Discussion/Opinion Essay: Tips and Tactics

  1. Invest the first few minutes in understanding the question, highlighting the key points. Familiarize yourself with the two perspectives offered and outline your essay with reasons for or against these viewpoints.
  2. Craft your essay starting with an introduction, then proceed with two main paragraphs, and conclude succinctly.
  3. In the introduction, articulate the topic in your own words and provide some context. Explain why the issue is relevant or why it has been contentious lately.
  4. Do not feel compelled to declare your stance in the introductory paragraph. It is acceptable to explore the given opinions first and then disclose your own viewpoint in the conclusion.
  5. Commence each main body paragraph with a clear topic sentence that encapsulates the main argument or point of the paragraph, supporting it with relevant explanations and instances.
  6. Ensure smooth transitions between paragraphs using appropriate linking words and phrases for coherence and flow.
  7. Substantiate the arguments in your main paragraphs with concrete details and illustrative examples.
  8. Conclude by encapsulating the key arguments from both perspectives and affirming your position, steering clear of new information.
  9. Maintain clear paragraph separation for readability and organization, leaving a blank space between them or indenting the first line of each new paragraph.
  10. Allocate around 40 minutes to complete this task, ensuring your handwriting remains legible.
  11. Throughout your essay writing process, bear in mind the marking criteria used by IELTS examiners, as detailed in the IELTS Writing Test guidelines.
