Task 2 – Problem Resolution Essay: Introduction

The Problem/Solution Essay tests your ability to:

  • Identify the causes of a problem
  • Propose possible solutions

On the question paper, you see a statement about a problem and then two questions. One question asks you to give the causes of the problem and the other question asks you to propose solutions.

Here are the basic rules for writing Problem/Solution Essays:

  • Read the statement and questions carefully.
  • Write a brief introduction.
  • Write about the causes of the problem in one or two main paragraphs.
  • Write about possible solutions in one or two main paragraphs.
  • Support your answer by giving reasons from your own knowledge or experience.
  • Write a short conclusion.

Be sure to:

  • Complete the task in about 40 minutes.
  • Write at least 250 words.
  • Use an academic register or style.
  • Do not use notes or bullet points.
